A Roti That Will Blow Your Pants Off

There’s only one eatery in Toronto with a roti powerful enough to set your mouth on fire and burn a hole in your stomach, and that’s Ghandi Roti located on Queen Street West. Don’t let the virtuous name fool you, this is one place that will leave you cursing the day you ordered a medium-spiced roti causing you to weep with each bite.

The extensive menu at Ghandi consists of eighteen varieties of rotis and a handful of rice dishes. I strongly recommend you order one of their legendary rotis, my favorite being the Cauliflower with Potato ($7.95) seen above. They’re served super-sized and can easily be shared or saved for another meal.

Everything is made fresh here including the East-Indian-style shell, right before your very eyes. This no-frills, hole-in-the-wall seats a maximum of 10 people and is a favorite among Torontonians. My only qualm is the wait time which can be up to 30 minutes — a torturous eternity as you impatiently smell the fresh aromatic odors of curry.

My only piece of advice is DO NOT order your dish spiced medium or higher. I can’t stress this enough. If you’re ready to lose all sensation in your mouth, then by all means go for it. But don’t say I didn’t warn you to be prepared to hold onto your pants (if you know what I mean, and I think you do).

Yes the daytime chef for the last year or 2 has a different scale for heating that is higher than the average Canadian scale. Too spicy can really take away from your enjoyment of this incredible meal. If it is ever to spicy for you, you can try three things. Eat it when it is cold (trust me it works) or add 35% Cream (the key to Butter Chicken), or have it with Raita or plain yogurt. If you order in the evening it is usually a female chef, Tashi. I don’t think she makes things as spicy but I could be wrong. There was a time when I used to eat these 3 times a week, but I have since moved out of the hood, so I am there less.

Rest assured that these rotis are incredible and well worth the wait. But just so you know, you can also phone in your order 416 504-8155 to save time.

They have just recently opened up a new Ghandi on St. Clair St. near Jane (Across from Walmart) the owner Avtar (the guy in the picture on the menu) is there most of the time these days.

Ah yes! Buying a container of Raita and pouring it on your roti is an excellent idea to cut the heat. Ghandi is my all-time favourite roti shop in Toronto. Since moving to New York, I haven’t found a comparison yet which is a great excuse to make frequent trips back to my Canadian hood.

Thanks for letting us know of the new location. If you happen to go, please report back and let us know what you think.

    “Share”?
    “Save for another meal?”

Who is the imposter writing this blog today?
