Blown Away at Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill

Yesterdays sushi review was subpar, but today it’s sublime! I can’t believe I’ve lived in NYC for almost two years now and had yet to try a meal at the Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill. Being a tad on the pricey side, it’s not the sort of place I usually think about popping into after a hard days work. I usually reserve these sorts of restaurants for more special occasions, and a going away lunch for my former boss was the perfect excuse to tag along and dig in.
We started off sharing an assortment of appetizers from miso soup to deep fried rock shrimp, but the dish which really stood out was the Gindara Saikyoyaki ($18.25). Two tender, sweet pieces of miso marinated black cod grilled to perfection. Slightly charred on the outside and moist on the inside. This was a favorite amongst the group which meant one thing. Whip out those chopsticks stat and grab a piece as quickly as you can before it was greedily devoured by the gluttonous mob of three.

Blue Ribbon Sushi has a slew of salads to pick from, but sometimes the simple classic is the way to go which is why we ordered the House Salad ($9.75). For almost ten dollars you get a heaping bowl of lettuce, avocado, carrot and watercress smothered in a light miso sesame dressing.

I always enjoying eating a dish I’ve never experienced before and this time round it was the Chawan Mushi ($11.50). A generous bowl of steamed egg custard with shrimp, unagi, shitake and watercress which arrived to our table wafting a hearty aroma.

You can’t eat at Blue Ribbon Sushi and not order the sushi (duh). After gorging on appetizers, we opted to share the Hanoo ($29.50) platter which consisted of an assortment of spicy gunkan and rolls with a side of, count them, three more custom rolls!

Who knew it only takes three people to consume this spectacular amount of food. Well, I’m glad I’ve finally made my way to Blue Ribbon Sushi and believe me it won’t be the last.
