Yay for More Yuzu

It’s no secret that Yuzu is my favourite place for sushi in Toronto. It just doesn’t get better than this. So during a recent visit when Chef Bruce Bu presented a new seasonal appetizer menu, I knew I had to try a few of the goodies. The Hokkaido Scallops ($9) are so good, we ordered it twice.

These are like tiny sushi pizzas, but featuring delicately torched scallops balancing perfectly on a sphere of panko-crusted rice. The roe pop in your mouth and clash in the most incredible way with the crunchy and smooth textures from the rice and scallop.

The Tuna and Avocado Tartare ($12) is served in a large bowl with garlic oil, nori and Japanese herbs. The pink morels accent the various shades of green making this the perfect salad to usher in the spring season.

On the new menu there’s also a miso-marinated Duck Salad, Mussel Sakamushi, Fluke Carpaccio, Hibachi Konro (personalized seafood hot pot) and several other delicious-sounding items, which simply means I’m gonna have to come back and try them all.

Of course a meal at Yuzu isn’t complete without at least three rounds of sushi. I’m a huge fan of their nigiri, which I usually get as part of the Sushi Dinner Deluxe Combo, and then order a la carte based on what’s freshest that day. Today our bonuses included Kampachi ($8, left) which was so fresh it glistened and Butterfish ($8).

Usually we’re so stuffed there’s zero room for dessert, but my Yuzu loyalists, DT and C.Wong #2, took one for the team and we split some Black Seasame Ice Cream ($4). Soon we were off into the night with our lips stained slightly black, only to know we would return again soon, to conquer the rest of this new Yuzu menu.

The black sesame ice cream is also the perfect colour reference for a wall paint. It is the most beautiful slate ever!
