Meet Christine Clarke. She’s a friend of the Double P’s and the person who introduced me to Mother’s Dumplings when it was located on Huron Street. Specializing in steamed, boiled and pan-fried parcels of goodness, the restaurant has since relocated to a new spot on Spadina Ave, south of College St. While the space is much larger, there are plenty of gripes on Chowhound about slow service, sold-out items and long line-ups. Despite the poor reviews, Christine and I decided to check it out and agree there’s still one very good thing about this mutha.

What makes this Mother better than all the rest? Read on for the goods.

Welcome to the first entry of our new series called I Love Food. It’s a spotlight on people who adore eating just as much as we do.

Hannah Sung is a writer, producer and non-professional eating aficionado. Sure, she’s the host of the CBC Book Club and a columnist for Flare Magazine, but today we’re putting aside her impressive resume and focusing on the gal who loves chowing down and eating her way around the world.

Why do you love food?
It’s social for me. I’m not into anything particularly exotic or fancy, I just love sitting around with friends and eating and drinking together. We have great Ethiopian in my neighbourhood, which is good for that. I love sharing communal dishes. It’s the Korean in me.

Read on for more about Hannah’s favourite foods and her obsession with breakfasts from around the world.

Is it just us, or does a chip feel naked without dip? The Double P’s are a huge fan of smothering tortillas with stuff, from edmame hummus to fresh salsa. So when I found So Delicious Hot Mexican 7-Layer Dip ($6.99), it was like a chorus of angels sang as I opened up the plastic container.

Is this dip really heaven sent? Read on to find out what makes up the seven divine layers.

If there’s one man who knows whiskey, it’s Kelly McAlonen, the bar manager (and self-professed “head alcoholic”) of Quinn’s Steakhouse & Irish Bar. I decided to trust him with my first taste of quality whiskey and Kelly took great care customizing my experience and educating me on the do’s and don’ts of whiskey drinking.

The first and most important tip involves adding something to every glass of whiskey you drink. And it’s not ice. Read on for our interview with Kelly.

Back in the day, I used to live close to the Terroni on Balmoral Street. It was the best restaurant to have nearby. The Double P’s are avid fans of their southern Italian foods as proven here, and convenience of calling in a pizza order and picking it up on the way home was second to none. So imagine my joy when I saw Bar Centrale by Terroni was opening up near my workplace, at 1095 Yonge Street, the former location of the Montreal Bread Company and the “five thieves” shops.

What delights will this new Terroni hold? Read on to find out the scoop.
