The Biggest Breakfast in America

I don’t mean to come off sounding like a judgmental jerk, but whenever I eat in the U.S., I prefer to share an entrée rather than ordering one all to myself. It’s economical, it allows me to test out an appetizer or two, and the portion sizes are usually sufficient for two. My strategy proved itself useful at the infamous brunch spot Hash House A Go Go in San Diego. No, that picture is not some kind of illusion, the plate really is larger than my entire forearm!

Based on my pre-travel research, Hash House is the most jumpin’ weekend brunch spot in town. (They also have two locations in Las Vegas.) The popular restaurant serves “twisted farm food” and aim to keep the fun in food. Now, they don’t officially serve the biggest breakfast in America, but compared to any other breakfast I’ve ever had, this was gasp-inducing huge.

It was pouring rain on Saturday when we arrived before 11am, yet the wait was still an hour long. Patrons huddled under umbrellas while the staff directed the drenched to grab a free coffee inside.

Once I was seated, I decided to warm up with some hot chocolate. Now, it’s hard to judge the scale of this “mug,” but yes, if you think it resembles a bowl, you are correct. It fit five full-size marshmallows with room to spare. Basically, it was so big it was should be served to the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk. (Yes, now I’ve resorted to recommending restaurants for mythical characters.)

My companion and I shared the Ham, Spinach and Cheddar Farm Scramble ($11.95) which is served with grilled mashed or crispy potatoes and biscuit. While the waitress looked surprised we were sharing the main, let me stress again, it’s more than enough for two people. Heck, the biscuit alone is nearly the size of my head. Everyone seemed to be leaving with leftovers, which is another way to do it, but when you’re staying in a hotel, re-heating anything later is a challenge.

The menu also boasts house hashes, farm benedicts, flapjacks, french toast and much more. And judging by the item ordered by the girl to my left, everything is over-sized. Clearly when it comes to breakfast at Hash House A Go Go, bigger is indeed better.

When I brought my dear friend, Baptiste, who lives in the Massif Central of France, to Florida from New York, I wanted him to have a quintessential American Southern experience, so I took him to Skyway Jack’s in St. Petersburg, Florida for breakfast. Not only do they serve every breakfast meat known to man, flapjacks, eggs and grits, but they serve them in massive quantities at prices that can only be described as crazy. They are served by waitresses who have combined 200 years of serving experience.
I don’t eat meat and don’t eat massive breakfasts, but once a decade, a visit to Skyway Jack’s is a must for me.
