October 2010

This year I finally made it to Foxley Bistro & Bar on Ossington. I put it on my Restaurant Must-Eat List at the beginning of 2010, and I’m happy to report it’s finally time to cross it off. There was plenty of hype surrounding my visit since I’d heard rave reviews about their legendary ribs which several people insisted I must order.

Did Foxley and their ribs live up to my expectations? Read on to find out.

UPDATE (Feb 2011): Sadly, the Crown Princess no longer offers their Early Bird Dim Sum special before 11am. Best to make the trek up north and visit sister restaurant Crown Prince which still runs the deal and offers more variety.

Everyone knows really good dim sum is found way uptown, like in Markham or Scarborough. Cause if you’re looking for dim sum in downtown Toronto, there’s only been two choices: 1) Tasty, upscale dim sum like Lai Wah Heen or Dynasty with their high price points, or 2) Run-of-the-mill, dirt-cheap restaurants where quality is always below average. Finally, there’s an option that merges the two. The Crown Princess (1033 Bay St.) has delicious shared dishes that are reasonably priced, but of course, there’s a catch: You must order before 11a.m.

Yep, you gotta pull yourself out of bed early to get this great deal. Read on to see the 13 dishes we ordered.

When I saw a Tim Horton’s commercial announcing their new Breakfast Wrap ($1.99), I knew I had to try one. I was a fan of their breakfast sandwich until I found out the bacon version contains only slightly less fat (24 grams) than a Big Mac (29 grams). Damn you, delicious biscuits. Now I occasionally order one on an English Muffin, but I hoped the new wrap might take its place.

Read on to find out what the wrap contains and how a mysterious sauce plays a role.

If you’re a fan of sushi, how about eating two massive handrolls for lunch? While I haven’t seen anything like this in North America, ordering a couple of larger-than-life temakis is how it’s done at Noori in Lisbon, Portugal. After a day of sightseeing, I popped in for a quick, cone-shaped sushi fix.

How did sushi in Portugal compare to what’s found in Toronto? Read on for the verdict.

Cottage season may be coming to an end, but there’s a terrific alternative in Leslieville. Ceili Cottage is the home to one of the best Mac & Cheese’s in the city (its only competition is at Weezie’s), and it’s where you’ll find my favourite oyster shucker, Patrick McMurray. Ceili is the “Irish Local” Patrick’s always wanted to run and it’s quickly become the place to be on Queen Street East.

What makes Ceili Cottage so memorable? Read on to learn more about the beer, the shucker and of course, the food.
