There is nothing better than receiving a gift that’s thoughtful, handmade, created especially for you, and has to do with everyone’s favourite meal: brunch. I was given a hand-drawn Toronto Brunch Map by my co-worker Lindsay Zier-Vogel. After unrolling the scroll with great excitement, I was happy to see two of my regular spots, The Senator and Avenue Diner. But the best thing about the guide are the new places it suggests I spend my weekend mornings, all personally recommended by someone who’s food taste I completely trust. Here Lindsay talks about what’s so great about brunch and how she picked which restaurants should make the map.

Wanna see the map up close? Read on as Lindsay unrolls her scrumptious secrets.

The first thing Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson did after rocking the Toronto Jazz Festival on June 29 with the rest of The Roots was sit down to enjoy a grape freezie. However, the moment of potential relaxation was quickly interrupted when a pesky journalist began to pepper him with questions about…what else…food. We already learnt about his love for hot sauce and now we uncover the drummer’s favourite place to eat in Toronto.

Too lazy to watch the video? We understand. Read on to find out where ?uestlove fuels up in Toronto before a Roots concert or DJ gig.

We started this blog with a humble post about a delicious cup of hot chocolate in Buenos Aires titled “Submarino.” Since then, we’ve eaten much more substantial meals, and figured out it’s best to write a better headline. Yes, there was a learning curve and to everyone’s surprise (including our own) we’re still at it, and today we’re celebrating our first birthday! To recap the past year when eating became “part of the job,” we’re looking back at the 10 best dishes from Plato Putas’s first 365 days. Let the drooling begin.

Come take a walk down memory lane as we share with your our top culinary moments of the past year.

Goodbye 2009 and hello 2010! The start of the new year is an exciting one, with so many places to visit and so many culinary adventures to dig into. We asked some our favourite food experts to tell us about the one restaurant they want to hit up this year.

Erin McKenna, Chef and Owner of BabyCakes NYC
Woodfire Grill in Atlanta! I was a big fan of Kevin Gillespie on this season’s Top Chef. Even though I don’t eat pig, he is thoughtful and down-to-earth with his approach to cooking. I want to go to his restaurant so bad!

Daniel Muia, Chef and Owner of Mogette Bistro
I’d like to go eat at Buca in Toronto. Rob Gentile is a talented guy, he was a top guy with Mark McEwan for a long time so he knows his stuff. I’ve read the reviews, heard really good things and I’d like to check it out. I believe I heard somewhere that he was using all his Nonna’s recipes, sounds good to me.

Read on ’cause we’ve got more great chefs, a Martha Stewart recipe writer, fellow food lovers and yours truly naming the delicious places in Paris, London, Toronto and New York that we want to visit this year.

2009 was a year to remember. We officially launched Plato Putas in March and have been eating our way from city-to-city over the past 10 months. We’ve feasted on the finest, the obscure and the downright obscene. Our conversations about food couldn’t have happened without the talented chefs who make digging in so pleasurable that we’re inspired to document our eating experiences. So please join us, and some of our fellow food lovers, as we salute our favourite restaurants of 2009.

I’ve eaten at Nota Bene on Queen Street in Toronto many times and have never had a bad experience. The service is meticulous yet not overbearing. The food is just delicious. I finally had the chance to have David Lee’s private 60-day dry-aged Ribsteak earlier this fall. Buttery and tender. Finish off with a divinely good sticky toffee pudding. The best part? You don’t need a second mortgage to have a phenomenal meal.

Meghan Coyne, Recipe Writer for The Martha Stewart Show
Its soooo cliché, but my parents took me to The Waverly Inn in New York City for my birthday this past year and I had the absolute best time! I actually had a broken leg (and ankle!) for my birthday this year, but the staff was more than accommodating and we had a delightful table in the garden out back (it was May). Of course, the food was divine as well. I actually couldn’t decide between so many items on the menu. I would go back in a heartbeat…. If only I could get another reservation.

We’ve got Nota Bene’s David Lee, chef Roger Mooking, Babycakes’ Erin McKenna, both the Double P’s and many more recalling their favourite meals of 2009. Read on to see if one of your favourites is on the list.
