Bloor St.

Newly opened Sushi Couture (456 Bloor St. West) is run by Ken Zhang, a former chef from one of my favourite sushi spots, Japango. Before visiting, I had to get over the irrational fear that I’d be cheating on Bruce Bu and his restaurants Japango and Yuzu. (Perhaps this is similar to what some people feel when they consider changing hair stylists.) Once I got over the ridiculous notion and arrived for lunch, I realized that my true concern should be whether I’d be able to withstand the freezing cold interior long enough to enjoy my sushi. The temperature outdoor is cold enough, so why must sitting inside be a chilly affair?

I’m not the only person complaining about the lack of heat here. Read on to find out how bad it really is.

A recent Groupon deal brought me to Chippy’s (490 Bloor St. West)…twice. The first time was in October, when I arrived to find they only had one of their six seafood options in stock (the cod). This pissed me off, so I headed west for a delightful Korean meal at Ka Chi. Last week I made attempt number two but called ahead and was assured the entire fried menu was available, including the addition of sturgeon. But after my visit I still had two complaints: No coleslaw and the state of their countertops.

What was wrong with the counter? Trust us, you’re gonna wanna read on before you make a visit to Chippy’s.

If there’s one bowl that signals comfort food, it’s the hot stone bowls at Ka Chi (612 Bloor St. West). The Korea Town institution is always filled with deep black bowls set infront of families, students and friends in search of a good meal that won’t break the bank. One of the dishes that makes me smile is the Hot Stone Pot Bibimbap with Bulgogi and Fried Egg ($8.95). Mix and mash the contents together with a generous squeeze of Sirachi sauce, and on a cold winter night it’ll easily provide stomach insulation for two.

Believe it or not, this isn’t even Ka Chi’s signature dish. Read on to find out what is in that very popular hot stone bowl.

Yes, what you see above is a monstrosity of frozen yogurt overindulgence. Which is basically the point of everyone’s first visit to Menchie’s (511 Bloor St. W). Toronto finally has a self-serve fro-yo shop, complete with 12 flavours, and an endless combination of toppings and sauces to help you tailor-make your perfect bowl.

Wanna see these exactly how many toppings Menchie’s offers? Read on because I guarantee you’ll be shocked and amazed.

UPDATE (Feb 2011): Sadly, the Crown Princess no longer offers their Early Bird Dim Sum special before 11am. Best to make the trek up north and visit sister restaurant Crown Prince which still runs the deal and offers more variety.

Everyone knows really good dim sum is found way uptown, like in Markham or Scarborough. Cause if you’re looking for dim sum in downtown Toronto, there’s only been two choices: 1) Tasty, upscale dim sum like Lai Wah Heen or Dynasty with their high price points, or 2) Run-of-the-mill, dirt-cheap restaurants where quality is always below average. Finally, there’s an option that merges the two. The Crown Princess (1033 Bay St.) has delicious shared dishes that are reasonably priced, but of course, there’s a catch: You must order before 11a.m.

Yep, you gotta pull yourself out of bed early to get this great deal. Read on to see the 13 dishes we ordered.
