Pizza

Starting a brand-new year means making a mental list of restaurants you really want to dine at in next 12 months. For residents of West Queen West, there’s a new pizza restaurant in town, an import from Treviso, Italy. Piola has spread its brand of pizzerias to Brazil, Argentina, Turkey and the U.S. and have just opened their first Canadian location at 1165 Queen St. West. The media launch event allowed me explore the space and try the menu, including the highlight, Polenta & Ragu ($9, shown above).

Blame Mr. Greenjeans, JJ Muggs and Baton Rouge as the reasons why I’ve never considered the Eaton Centre to be a satisfying culinary destination. Thankfully the addition of the fourth Mercatto location, Trattoria Mercatto (220 Yonge St., across from Roots near Sears), has officially changed my opinion. The menu is slightly different than their other restaurants but was still developed by Executive Chef Rob Rossi (pictured above), who’s currently one of the three chefs remaining on Season 1 of Top Chef Canada.

Read on to see Chef Rob’s Mercatto creations and to hear about his surprising announcement.

Amy Pataki from The Toronto Star said it was better. My friend Edgar pronounced it was exceptional. And while I am a fan of Ossington’s Pizza Libretto (especially their lunch prix fixe), if people are claiming Queen Margherita Pizza (1402 Queen St. East) is superior, that’s good enough reason as any for a night out. Working in their favour is the fact that I can make a reservation (compared to Libretto’s no reso policy), and I’m informed that on my chosen date of December 26, there will be “many deals on” in an effort to collect funds for a local charity. With this mysterious and intriguing tease, I head to Leslieville wondering if Boxing Day sales also apply to restaurants.

What kind of crazy deals were going on? Forget Best Buy and Future Shop. At QMP, Boxing Day is all about the ‘za.

There is always an assortment of hot sauces in my fridge, and one of the staples is Peperoncini Piccanti from Terroni. These hot peppers are served in a white ramekin at the restaurant and I can’t imagine eating their pizzas or pastas without them. If you’re a fan of the hot, you’ll want to leave with a jar for $11.99 (sold at all locations). Each one lasts me only a few months, since there are many home-cooked dishes that get flecked with the bright red pepper bits, seeds and oils.

What do these peppers looks like, and what should you eat them on? Read on for the spicy goods.

While it’s nice to have variety on a menu, sometimes I welcome limited choice, which is why I’m a fan of Prix Fixe. Of course, it has to be at a good restaurant and preferably not during one of those ‘licious events. A perfect example of one I enjoy is Pizza Libretto (221 Ossington Ave.) and their great three-course fixed-price lunch menu that’s only $15.

Read on to find out exactly what you can get in the three courses.
