There’s a wonderful new project happening infront of Scadding Court Community Centre (707 Dundas St. West, just east of Bathurst) that revolves around supporting and promoting small businesses who can set up shop in retrofitted shipping containers. The SCC Live Local Marketplace includes several food vendors and on my first visit I picked the Monforte Dairy stall because I’ve heard rave reviews about their grilled cheese sandwiches. First, let me say that although they’re working out of a shipping container, the two guys running the stall were the ultimate example of great customer service. Better, I’d venture to say, than I’ve received in some restaurants and most stores.

What made these guys so friendly and how great was the sammy? Read on for the gooey goods.

Okay, confession time: I never visited the old Caplansky’s Delicatessen above the Monarch Tavern even though I heard it had delicious smoked meat sandwiches. I just wasn’t ready to have it re-surp my lingering tastebud memory of Schwartz’s in Montreal. But when Caplansky’s relocated to College Street, I couldn’t fight it any longer and headed in for what turned into an absolutely excellent experience.

How did the sandwich stack up? Which of the 5 mustards should you try? And what’s this about a Smoked Meat Burger? Read on for all the goods.

The Breakfast Club isn’t just the name of an ’80s movie, it’s also the name of best breakfast sandwich I’ve ever tried. It’s from Canadian burger institution Harvey’s and believe me, it was go-od! Yes, I said was. You watched them fry an egg over-easy on the griddle, top it with bright-orange processed cheese, add a couple slices of tomato, a piece or two of crispy bacon and pack it all together between a toasted bun. Oh man, it was my morning meal of choice, and it clocked in at an affordable $2.50. Then suddenly, everything changed.

What the hell happened to my beloved Breakfast Club? Read on and prepare yourself for heartbreak.

As a resident of Toronto, there are some food items that are — say it with me now — Le-gen-dary. The Italian sandwiches from Uno Mustachio atĀ St. Lawrence Market South (95 Front St. E) are a local classic. They’reĀ massive, saucy, sloppy and topped just the way you like it. The most popular choices are Veal or Eggplant ($5.75), or you can splurge for both ($6.65).

Find out exactly what’s in the sandwich and how it could be made even tastier.

Have you been eating salmon and tuna salad sandwiches all your life? Are you ready to eff the Filet-O-Fish? It’s time to upgrade, kids!

The Fish Store (657 College St.) is the place to experience a real fish sandwich. When you walk in this tiny neighbourhood spot, you’re greeted by a selection of fresh seafood on ice. There’s Grouper, Sea Bass, Salmon, Halibut, Calamari, White Fish, Shrimp, Scallop and many more. Simply make your pick or ask the knowledgeable staff what’s the freshest catch of the day.

Your choice of fish is then grilled, covered with an extremely flavourful vinaigrette and paired with lettuce, fresh cilantro, tomato and red onion. It’s all squished into a fresh Portuguese roll. I splurged on the Black Cod ($9.75) which I’d highly recommend. I also had a bite of the Orange Roughy ($7.59) which was also tasty, but unanimously inferior to the cod because of its slightly drier texture.

The Fish Store also serves three types of soup: Clam or Manhattan Chowder and Butternut Squash (all $3.99). Plus they’ve got fish burritos, fish burgers and a fish salad. Yep, this is the place where all your seafood dreams will come true.
