It’s no secret that Sukhothai is my favourite Thai restaurant in the Toronto. So when I heard co-owners Jeff and Nuit Regular were planning to open another spot named Khao San Road (326 Adelaide St. West near Peter St.), I was absolutely thrilled. So thrilled in fact, that I searched out their still-under-construction website and signed up for email updates. This small act had great rewards because I, along with everyone else who stalked out the new restaurant online, were invited this past weekend to preview Executive Chef Nuit’s new dishes prior to their official opening (tentatively slated for February 1, possibly sooner).

Read on to feast your eyes on the Khao San Road sneak peek.

I fell in love with Thai restaurant Sukhothai when I first ate there last month, and vowed to eat my way through their small and delicious-looking menu. This pledge is not going well at all. On my second visit I ended up ordering their Beef Khao Soi again because I had been craving it for days. And on my third visit, I ate off-menu.

What does leaving your meal up to the chef get you at Sukhothai? How about a five course meal for under $20 per person. Read on!

UPDATE (Feb. 2011): While Sukhothai is still open, Chef Nuit and many of these dishes can now be found at her new restaurant, Khao San Road.

I could say it’s one of the best Thai restaurants in the city, I could also say it might just be the best, but I’m willing to lay down the definitive win here: Sukhothai is the best Thai in Toronto. There are many reasons it earns this title, the first is their Garlic Chicken ($7.25). I’d read raves and praises about the dish and I thought: ‘What’s the big deal? It’s pieces of fried chicken?’ But then I took a bite.

How did that one bite wipe away my cynicism? Read on to find out how true love played a role in creating this amazing Thai food.

With great food writing comes great responsibility. Since starting Plato Putas, co-workers look to us for restaurant recommendations and friends ask us to plan outings that involve memorable meals. But we’re totally cool with this, and also really like when people recommend dishes they insist we seek out and try. My co-worker Curtis has been raving about the Ping Gai from Queen Mother Cafe for over a year now and we finally met up so I could discover whether this Laotian grilled chicken dish lived up to all the hype.

Did Queen Mother deliver the Laos experience I was promised? Read on for the verdict.

Here’s what qualifies me as a Pad Thai Expert:
1) I’ve been to Thailand (although I only saw tourists eating pad thai)
2) I’ve eaten a lot of pad thai
3) I really like a good pad thai

Sure, they’re not really super-solid credentials, but that’s all I’ve got. Buckle up and get ready for the ranking.

It’s time to reveal where fthe best Thai noodle dish can be found in the T-dot. Read on for our top 3.
