Last time we met up with Alison Fryer of The Cookbook Store in Toronto, she revealled the 3 Most Useful Cookbooks for a Beginner. Her recommendations prompted me to pick up Mark Bittman’s How To Cook Everything, which truly is an excellent resource for any casual chef.

This time we’re heading to the other extreme, and exploring food porn and eye candy more suited for a coffee table than your kitchen. Here Alison flexes her muscles (these two books are both big and heavy!) and shows off the two most beautiful yet completely impractical cookbooks. Watch the video above and feast your eyes on Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck Cookbook and Ferran Adria’s El Bulli.

If you dig the mind-boggling photography from The Fact Duck Cookbook, check out our exclusive interview with Dominic Davies, the incredibly talented photographer behind the images and concepts.

Alison Fryer knows her cookbooks. She’s been working at The Cookbook Store in Toronto for 27 years and she’s read and tried thousands of recipes from all around the world.

“A lot of people don’t actually use cookbooks — I can’t believe I said that out loud!” Alison laughs. “But people love to read their cookbooks.” While flipping through pages of food porn is enticing, what happens when you actually want to learn to cook? Here Alison breaks down which cookbooks every beginner should own.

Read on for a transcript of the interview plus 3 bonus cookbooks every newbie cook should own.
