UPDATE: Oh Boy Burger closed in Feb. 2011.

Being named Best Gourmet Burger in town is both a gift and a curse. Just ask Oh Boy Burger Market, who scored top marks in a Toronto-wide comparison by Amy Pataki of The Toronto Star, beating out Craft Burger, The Burger Bar, Gourmet Burger Co., W Burger Bar and BQM Burger Shoppe. On the plus side, business has been booming for Oh Boy. A co-worker went the day after the article came out, and they’d already sold out of burgers by 4 pm. On the downside, customers can’t help biting into their burger loaded with high expectations and a side of skepticism.

So do WE think it’s the best gourmet burger around? Read on for the verdict.

The weather’s getting chillier which means heartier foods are needed to warm our bellies. For a delicious selection of meat pies, sumptuous baked goods, turkey chili and yes, pigs in a blanket, head to my favourite food destination in Toronto’s Distillery District, the Brick Street Bakery (55 Mill St., Bldg 45A).

Get a closer look at that juicy sausage roll and read on for more about this unique bakery.

I’ve eaten my way through The Ex before, but this year the artery-clogging consumption reached a feverish new pitch. Since the Canadian National Exhibition only runs for a couple weeks each year, there’s immense pressure to try all the gastric options, even if they’re gimmicky, disgusting or likely to cause, well, a gastric bypass. You’ve only got one long weekend left before the Ex closes on Sept. 7, so here’s a visual menu of the junkiest food we could find. First up is this year’s craziest novelty (shown above), Bacon Covered in Chocolate ($5), available on the Midway.

If you’re not down with this sweet-and-salty microwaved concoction, it’s always smart to go with Tiny Tom Donuts, a staple of the Ex ($5 per dozen). You can top them with icing sugar, cinnamon, apple cinnamon or chocolate. Watch the journey of how one lil’ donut begins his greasy birth, moves along the conveyor belt with its brethren, and meets an untimely demise covered in cinnamon sugar.

Pizza on a stick? Deep-fried Mars Bars? You gotta be kidding me! Read on for more stomach-churning pictures.

As a resident of Toronto, there are some food items that are — say it with me now — Le-gen-dary. The Italian sandwiches from Uno Mustachio at St. Lawrence Market South (95 Front St. E) are a local classic. They’re massive, saucy, sloppy and topped just the way you like it. The most popular choices are Veal or Eggplant ($5.75), or you can splurge for both ($6.65).

Find out exactly what’s in the sandwich and how it could be made even tastier.

Arriving late via road trip to Montreal and finding a decent restaurant in the wee hours doesn’t leave room for many options. Yes, we could have dined on the Montreal staple cuisine of poutine goodness, and believe me, there were places a plenty offering this sinful artery-clogging dish. But we were in the mood for something a little upscale…something a little French. Our new Montreal friends, T’Cha and Heidi, took us to L’Express (3927 Saint-Denis), a classic Parisian style brasserie. The great thing about this place is the kitchen is open late! Till 3 a.m. to be exact and the restaurant is known to serve classic French food morning, day and night.

The menu is pretty heavy-handed in the meat department. Tatare, steak frites and veal didn’t sound like dishes that would digest well at 1 a.m., so I took a walk on the light side and opted for the Fish Soup. Listed as an appetizer at $9.85 this could have easily been a main course, the portion size was enormous and absolutely delicious. Plus the accompanying roue was divine.

As a side we shared the Octopus and Lentil salad ($13.50). Ooh la la! Check out the presentation. It was quite impressive, featuring molded layers of soft octopus encasing brown lentils. Although the plating technique was spectacular, the dish was unfortunately a bit on the bland side. Apparently in this case, looks can be deceiving.

But for me the pièce de résistance of the meal were the homemade dark chocolate truffles (each $0.85) coated in a delicate dusting of cocoa. They practically melted in my mouth, so heavenly!

L’Express is one of those Montreal destinations — a classic bistro that’s on the top of everyone’s list. You’ll find all the usual suspects of classic French food at moderate prices. Be sure to call ahead and make reservations, this place is hopping! Bon appetit!
