It’s not an understatement when I proclaim that Olive et Gourmando is one of my favourite places to eat in the world. When I was in Montreal for six days on a work trip, I ate here four times. The only thing that stopped me from going more frequently is it’s closed on Sundays and Mondays, and after 6pm. If I was ever to open my own restaurant, this is exactly the kind of place I’d want it to be.

Yep, I’m an O&G groupie. Read on for superfluous adjectives, ass-kissing descriptions and a fawning review. But rest assured, it’s all completely deserved.

Yesterday was Fashion’s Night Out in NYC — a one-day celebration of fashion that simultaneously occurred in numerous countries across the globe. The whole idea stems from an initiative to promote retail purchases, restore consumer confidence and celebrate fashion. The U.S. and international editions of Vogue magazine coordinated the evening’s extravaganzas in their respective world fashion capitals. The “Ice Queen” herself, Anna Wintour, started off in Queens, NY and then made the rounds from borough to borough. Stores stayed open late and in the spirit of the event, served champagne. It was basically an evening of shopping, teetering in stilettos, gawking at fashionistas and dancing the night away at numerous block parties around the city.

Having to surround myself with loads of waif-like models, I was sticking to a strict eating regime. No carbs, no sugar and plenty of fresh vegetables in order to squeeze into my form-fitting attire. Cramming for Fashion’s Night Out was in full force, it’s smack dab in the middle of NYC Fashion Week! For those who aren’t familiar with the term, “cramming” is a preparation technique we, Plato Putas, perform in advance of bikini-wearing, beach vacations. While some people choose to stay fit the entire year, we opt to exercise excessively and avoid unhealthy food temptations for a few days, which to us seems like an eternity.

What’s the best way to cram without giving up taste? How can you eat your proverbial cake and hang with the models, too? Read on for the dish.

The good people at One Love Corn sure know how to make a mean corn-on-the-cob, as we’ve previously reported. But does the charm of their Harbourfront stall translate to their new restaurant space at Bloor and Bathurst? Based on a recent visit during Tornado Thursday in Toronto, One Love Vegetarian (854 Bathurst St.) is run with the same warm service as their summer post with delicious expanded offerings that stretch way beyond corn. Owners Ras Iville and Ikeila Wright have developed a Caribbean-influenced, all-vegan menu of rotis, pizzas, desserts, daily specials and fresh juice.

When we arrived at One Love, the sky was already darkening and the storm clouds were rolling in. I was also feeling skeptical because my dining partner Christine had committed foodie betrayal by visiting the restaurant the day before (I forgive you Christine!) and found that their corn soup was blander than the one served at their waterfront stall.

Did One Love redeem itself? And how does thunder, lightening and multiple=

It’s hard to believe a road trip can include healthy food stops along the way. While en route to New York City from a whirlwind girls weekend in Montreal, my friends and I were mentally prepared to dine at McDonalds. Normally I’d rather starve or eat my own fingers than hit a Mickey D’s, but with a car full of four hungry girls we needed food fast. (Not to be confused with fast food.) As we grudgingly approached the exit for a greasy mega-chain, we came across a nondescript sign for Conroy’s Organics. Not sure what we were getting ourselves into, we put the pedal to the metal, veered off the highway and were excited to see what was around the bend.

There it lay, sparkling in a grassy field amidst a sea of strange marble animal sculptures—ranging from roaring lions to arched dolphins—the life saving nutritious pit stop we’d been asking for, Conroy’s Organics! (8173 State Route 9, West Chazy, NY).

The four of us quickly got to ordering and picked up an Organic Hot Dog dripping with condiments in a soft pliable bun, warm Potato Knishes, hearty bowls of Vegetarian Chili and Spinach Spanakopita. You’ll have to forgive me, I was so busy plotting my next meal that I forgot to see what else was on the menu! But I do remember there being organic fair-trade coffee and teas, baked goods, soups and sandwiches. Not to mention fresh produce (we stocked up on corn) and a store full of organic natural products from skincare to crackers!

I guess the moral of the story kids is don’t be afraid to venture off the beaten path to find that hidden culinary gem. Go on, be a risk taker, that next unexpected exit may prove to be fruitful and if it’s not all it’s cracked up to be, pull a u-turn and find the closest McDonalds.

The best place to hang in Toronto during the summer is at Harboufront. And the best thing about Harboufront is the Grilled Corn at the One Love Corn stall. There is no greater happiness than biting into the juicy kernels that burst with flavours of lemon, lime, butter and their secret spice blend that has just the right amount of kick.

Jamaican-born owner Ras Iville Wright prepares your corn with what we can only describe as love. It goes for $3 per cob. They also serve a delicious Corn Soup at the stall, which is vegan to fit with Ras’ Rastafarian diet. If you’d like to make it at home, here’s the Corn Soup recipe.

This is the ninth straight summer One Love Corn has been in the same spot near the Toronto Star stage. The line-up can range from five to 30 minutes, but it’s worth the wait because the staff are always extremely warm and friendly.

This year they’ve fulfilled their lifelong dream by opening up a permanent restaurant, One Love Vegetarian (854 Bathurst St., one block north of Bloor). Look for a review coming soon. One Love!
